This is an old parcel of boulder opal splits and rubs from Queensland, Australia.While not the highest quality opal, they have good to great color for the money with most of the guesswork taken out of the cutting for you.Most pieces just need to be shaped and polished. Much of the work has already been done so let your imagine run wild!
Boulder opal is a "seam" opal in an ironstone matrix.The dark brown matrix polishes well.The opal seams are usually sculpted, except for thick bars that can be cut traditionally.This piece was photographed wet to simulate a polish. It measures approximately 35mm across, 11mm thick at one end and 5mm thick at the opposite end.
